Handing over a Wi-Fi password can be super annoying, right? It's one of those little headaches that really adds up in places like cafés, hotels, and co-working spaces. Well, a Wi-Fi QR code fixes that. People just scan it, and boom, they're connected.

This guide shows you how to create one for free, no app or account needed.

What Is a Wi-Fi QR Code?

A Wi-Fi QR code contains your network info, like the SSID, password, and security type. Phones can read this code directly. After scanning it, you get a "Join network?" pop-up on both iOS and Android devices. Tapping once connects you to the network.

The credentials are embedded in the QR code itself using the WIFI: URI scheme, so it works 100% offline. No internet connection, no server, no data stored anywhere.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) — exactly as it appears on devices
  • Your Wi-Fi password
  • The security type — WPA/WPA2 (almost all modern routers), WEP (old), or None (open networks)

That's it.

Step 1 — Open the Wi-Fi QR Generator

Go to genqrfree.com/wifi-qr-code-generator.

The Wi-Fi tab is pre-selected. You'll see three fields: Network Name, Password, and Security Type.

Step 2 — Enter Your Network Details

  1. Network Name (SSID) — type your exact Wi-Fi name. It's case-sensitive: CafeGuest and cafeguest are different networks.
  2. Password — type your Wi-Fi password. The field is masked by default.
  3. Security — select WPA/WPA2 for any modern router. Only choose WEP or None if you know your network uses them.

Your QR code updates live in the preview panel as you type.

Your password never leaves your browser. The generator runs entirely client-side — nothing is sent to any server.

Step 3 — Customize the Design (Optional)

A black-and-white QR code works fine, but a branded one looks more intentional in a café or hotel lobby.

Recommended customizations:

SettingRecommendation
Foreground colorYour brand color (keep contrast high)
BackgroundWhite — essential for reliable scanning
Size500–800px for print; 200px minimum for screen
FrameAdd a "Scan to connect" label frame for clarity
LogoAdd your logo in the center for brand recognition

Contrast warning: Avoid light foreground colors (light gray, yellow, pastel). If in doubt, the darker the QR, the better it scans.

Step 4 — Download and Print

Click Download PNG (or SVG for scalable printing).

Where to place it:

  • Café/restaurant — table tent card, menu back cover, counter stand
  • Hotel — welcome card in room, front desk card, elevator poster
  • Office — reception desk, meeting room signs, visitor badge printout
  • Retail — near the register, fitting room signs, shopping bag insert

Print size guide:

PlacementMinimum QR size
Table card (close range)3 × 3 cm
Counter stand (arm's length)6 × 6 cm
Wall poster (1–2 m away)12 × 12 cm

Does a Wi-Fi QR Code Expire?

The QR code lasts indefinitely as long as your network name and password stay the same. But if you do change your password, no biggie — just generate a new QR code (takes 30 seconds) and print it out.

Can Guests See My Password?

The password's hidden in the QR code, so it could be decoded by anyone using a QR reader app. It's like writing your password on a card that you carry around, which many places already make for guests. This is totally fine for a guest network.

If security is a concern, use a dedicated guest SSID with its own password, separate from your main network.

Does It Work on All Phones?

Yes, with no app required:

  • iPhone (iOS 11+) — built-in Camera app reads Wi-Fi QR codes natively
  • Android (9+) — Camera or Google Lens reads them natively
  • Older Android — a free QR reader app (e.g. Google Lens) works fine

Quick Recap

  1. Go to genqrfree.com/wifi-qr-code-generator
  2. Enter your SSID, password, and security type
  3. Optionally add a color and "Scan to connect" frame label
  4. Download PNG and print

Done in under 60 seconds.
